Kyiv: Uncertainty has once again increased regarding the long-running war in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has clearly said that the Israeli army will not remove its current deployment from Gaza until Hamas completely gives up its weapons. His statement has dealt a major blow to the ceasefire efforts and has also raised new questions on the proposal prepared with the mediation of America.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel's first priority is the safety of its citizens. He believes that lasting peace is possible only when Hamas is completely disarmed. He clarified that without this condition there can be no question of withdrawal of the army.
According to reports, a draft of the ceasefire was prepared by the US, but Netanyahu said that he does not agree with the current draft. He says that Israel has sent its suggestions to America and the final decision will be taken only keeping in mind the security interests.
It is being told that under the proposed plan, Hamas was to give up weapons in a phased manner. Along with this, a proposal was also made to Israel to withdraw its troops from a large part of Gaza and reduce attacks. However, no consensus has been reached between the two parties on this yet.
The conflict, which began on 7 October 2023, has plunged Gaza into a deep humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people have lost their lives and large numbers of civilians have been displaced. Large parts of the area have been reduced to debris, while hospitals, schools and infrastructure have been seriously affected.
At present both sides are firm on their respective stances. Israel says that first Hamas will have to give up its weapons, while Hamas is demanding withdrawal of troops and stopping of attacks. In such a situation, diplomatic efforts are continuing, but the path to a permanent ceasefire still does not seem easy.
