Brazil: A 21-year-old woman died after falling from a height of more than 130 feet during bungee jumping in Brazil. It is alleged that the crew threw her off the bridge without tying a safety rope. The incident terrified onlookers and a criminal investigation has now been launched into the incident.
The woman, who is identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, died after falling from the Skeleton Bridge in Sao Paulo state during a bungee jumping activity organised by a private company.
Video recorded at the scene appears to show staff carrying him to the edge of the bridge and then letting him go, apparently unaware that there was no safety rope tied around his waist.
Video circulating on social media captured the terrifying moments after the jump. As Maria fell from the bridge, bystanders suddenly realized something was terribly wrong. Moments after she was released from the platform, eyewitnesses began shouting "Rope, people, rope!" According to local authorities, the safety rope designed to support the jumper during the fall was not tied to the woman's body.
Before anyone could react, the girl had already fallen into the ravine. Emergency services arrived at the scene immediately, but she had already died a painful death. Her body was later taken to the Legal Medical Institute for examination. Maria had shared photos from the jump site shortly before the incident. One photo showed the bridge and her jump wristband. Along with the photo, she wrote, "Who was that crazy person who made me jump off the bridge?" the Daily Mail reported. The post has gone viral since news of the fatal accident broke.
Maria's fiance was present on the bridge when the incident happen. He reportedly became unwell upon hearing the news of Maria's death and needed medical attention.
Authorities have confirmed that six people were arrested at the scene and investigators have launched a probe into the cause of the fatal incident. Civil police have launched an investigation to determine whether criminal charges could be brought against those involved in organizing and conducting the event. Investigators are expected to review safety procedures, staff responsibilities, and whether established protocols were followed before the jump.
The incident has raised widespread concern about safety standards at adventure tourism destinations. Limeira Mayor Murilo Flix said the city council will file a complaint with the Brazilian federal government to seek accountability for the area's safety situation. "It's essential to hold accountable for the lack of access control in a federal area that has been a risk-averse for years and still lacks the necessary safety measures," Flix said. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fatal lapse, while harrowing footage and the woman's last social media post have sparked a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
