Two people lost their lives in the incident, while eight others were seriously injured. After the incident, the attacker fled from the spot.

Stampede during exam

The incident took place in the Barus & Holley Building, which is part of the university's School of Engineering and Physics departments. At that time the final exam of engineering design was going on. According to eyewitnesses, a person in black clothes suddenly entered the building and started firing. As soon as they heard the sound of bullets, the students got up from their seats and started trying to save their lives.

Active shooter alert issued on campus

As soon as information about the firing was received, the university administration immediately issued an active shooter alert. Students and staff were told to keep doors closed, silence phones, and hide in safe places. Within no time, the entire campus became deserted, and shelter-in-place orders were imposed in the surrounding areas as well.

Police and the FBI are searching for the attacker

Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O'Hara said the shooter, a male wearing black clothing, ran toward Hope Street. The police team continued searching the campus buildings and surrounding areas for several hours after the incident. The FBI is also assisting in the investigation.

Treatment of injured in hospital

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said all the injured were admitted to Rhode Island Hospital. His condition is said to be serious but is currently stable. The mayor said that this is an extremely tragic incident for the city and the state, and all resources are being deployed to arrest the culprit.

Students told about the experience of fear

The students present on the campus at the time of the incident said that the atmosphere was quite scary. One student said he was working in a nearby dorm when he heard sirens and got an active shooter alert on his phone. Some students said that as soon as they received the alert, they hid under the desk in the lab and switched off the lights.

White House expressed grief

President Donald Trump was informed about this incident. He said that prayers are being offered for the victims at this time. Vice President JD Vance also expressed grief over the incident on social media and asked to keep an eye on the situation.
