China Responds to Trump’s 100% Tariff Threat: Promotes Peace Over Conflict (Image Source: Social Media)
China has reacted strongly to US President Donald Trump’s idea of putting 50-100% tariffs on the country because of its ties with Russia. Speaking at a press conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China wants to solve problems through peace talks, not wars. He added that sanctions only make things more complicated and that China focuses on dialogue and political solutions for global conflicts.
The Chinese foreign minister spoke after meeting Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon. Wang Yi highlighted that China is a responsible country with “an excellent record on peace and security matters.” He stressed the importance of multilateralism, strengthening international mechanisms, and protecting the principles of the UN Charter. He also pointed out that the world is currently full of conflicts and chaos. For this reason, he said China and Europe should act as partners rather than rivals. “China and Europe should be friends, not enemies, and should work together instead of confronting each other. Making the right decisions during this period of great changes shows the responsibility both sides have to history and the people,” Wang Yi added, according to Global Times.
Wang Yi’s remarks followed Trump’s call for a 50-100% tariff on China for buying Russian oil until the Ukraine conflict ends. On Truth Social, Trump criticized NATO members, saying their support in the war “has been far less than 100%” and that buying Russian oil is “shocking.” He suggested that these purchases weaken NATO members’ negotiating power with Russia. Previously, Trump had imposed a 50% tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil but has not yet applied tariffs to other countries, including China, Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia.
China continues to position itself as a promoter of peace and international cooperation. Wang Yi stressed that through dialogue and collaboration, countries can address conflicts and protect global stability. The Chinese government’s stance shows its commitment to working with the world on resolving tensions rather than escalating them through economic or military pressure.
