'Nuclear Weapons Are the Only Security Guarantee' : Putin Ally’s Remark Sparks Global Alarm (X)
New Delhi: The latest statement by former Russian President and Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has created new concerns in international politics. He has said that Russia has preserved its sovereignty with the help of the power of nuclear weapons. He also accused America and Europe of provocative activities. This statement of Medvedev is being considered very serious amid the current global tension.
In an interview given to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Medvedev said that with the way the world is becoming unstable, many countries can take steps towards making nuclear weapons.
According to him, in the current situation the possibility has increased that some countries may start considering nuclear weapons as necessary for their security. This may worsen the situation at the international level.
Medvedev says that at present these weapons of mass destruction have become “the surest guarantee” of national security.
He said that many countries have the capability to develop military technology, while some are doing research in this field. It may not be in the interest of humanity, but the reality is that till now the world has not found any better guarantee of its security and sovereignty.
Medvedev also mentioned the New START treaty between the US and Russia related to nuclear arms reduction. He said that President Vladimir Putin has proposed to extend the deadline of this treaty by one year.
However, Russia has not yet received any official response from America on this proposal.
According to Russian officials, America has time till February 5 to decide on this extension. If agreement is not reached within the stipulated time, this treaty may end, due to which there is a possibility of further increase in tension between the two countries regarding nuclear weapons.
Experts believe that if the START treaty is not agreed upon, a new arms race could begin between the US and Russia. In such a situation, there is a fear that the nuclear balance in the world will deteriorate and the pressure on small countries will also increase.
