World News: US President Donald Trump has launched a direct attack on the BRICS organization, announcing that an additional 10% import tariff will be imposed on all member countries of the group. Trump made it clear that India will not be exempted from this new duty, as it is an active and engaged member of BRICS. This move is expected to significantly impact global trade relations, particularly the economic ties between India and the United States.

In a recent social media post, Trump alleged that BRICS nations are collaborating to damage the US economy and are working to undermine the strength of the US dollar. He stated, “If any country challenges America’s economic leadership or stands in opposition, it will have to face the consequences.”

Why Is India in Trump’s Crosshairs?

Trump specifically named India in his remarks, saying, “India may be our friend, but as long as it is part of BRICS and participates in criticizing American policies, it will be treated no differently than any other adversarial nation.” This statement was in response to discussions held at the recent BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, where US trade policies were openly criticized—something Trump interpreted as a hostile and anti-American gesture.

No Exceptions in the New US Policy

Trump emphasized that no country will be granted exceptions under this new trade policy. Whether a nation is a close ally or not, being a member of BRICS alone is enough to incur the new tariff. According to Trump, this measure is vital to preserve America’s economic sovereignty and to maintain the dollar’s position as the dominant global currency, stating, “The dollar is king—and we will keep it that way.”

When Will the Tariff Take Effect?

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant offered a slightly more diplomatic tone. According to a report by Reuters, Besant indicated that the tariffs will not be enforced before August 1, allowing room for further negotiations and diplomatic engagement. This delay provides a narrow window for countries like India to seek a resolution and possibly avoid the hike.

Traditional Allies Also Hit

Trump's aggressive trade stance extends beyond BRICS. He has also announced steep tariffs on long-time allies like Japan and South Korea, with duties ranging from 25% to 40%. Both nations have expressed concern and are reportedly in discussions with Washington to reduce the impact of these new levies.

What Lies Ahead for India?

With tensions rising, India now faces a tough diplomatic challenge. The key question is whether it will request a special exemption from the United States or remain aligned with BRICS solidarity. As the deadline approaches, the situation is likely to become a focal point of global trade diplomacy.

Trump’s posture makes it clear: any nation challenging the dominance of the US dollar will face consequences—even if it’s a strategic partner like India.
