Washington: The United States is taking aggressive steps to gain control of Greenland. President Donald Trump has found a way to address the opposition from some countries regarding the Greenland deal: he has unleashed a tariff bomb on eight European nations.
Trump is using tariff policy to increase pressure on the Greenland issue, and a further escalation of conflict with Europe is expected in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump has announced that tariffs would be increased on goods from European allies until the US is allowed to purchase Greenland. Trump believes that Greenland holds strategic importance for the United States.
Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated that a 10 percent additional tariff would be imposed on goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and the United Kingdom starting February 1. This tariff will then be increased to 25 percent on June 1 and will remain in effect until an agreement is reached.
Meanwhile, European countries have deployed military personnel to Greenland, a move that Trump described as dangerous. He called it a decision that would undermine stability.
In Denmark and Greenland, protests have also taken place against Trump's proposals, with demonstrators emphasizing that the people of Greenland should decide their own future.
Several key European Union countries have supported Denmark and warned that a military takeover of any territory within NATO by the US could severely damage the alliance.
The United Kingdom has also expressed its support for Denmark. This dispute is escalating tensions between the US and Europe and could have serious implications for international relations in the future.
