International News: US President Donald Trump has announced a 50 percent tariff on goods imported from India. The decision comes in response to India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia. According to Washington, these purchases provide Moscow with significant economic support, enabling it to sustain its war in Ukraine.
US Vice President JD Vance reacted to the announcement, saying that President Trump is pursuing a policy of economic pressure to weaken Russia. He explained that a large share of Russia’s revenue comes from oil exports, and by placing additional tariffs on countries like India, the US hopes to reduce Russia’s earnings. Vance added that the ultimate goal is to push Russia toward ending the war.
Vance also mentioned that President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently held talks. While he described the meeting as constructive, he acknowledged that some differences emerged between the two leaders. Nevertheless, the US believes it can still play a key role in facilitating peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Vance, tariffs on Indian goods are part of a broader strategy to directly impact Russia. As Indian imports become more expensive, Russia’s oil revenue will indirectly take a hit. He further explained that Trump’s message to Moscow is clear: if Russia stops its aggression in Ukraine, it could regain its place in the global economy. However, if the war continues, Russia should expect even tougher sanctions.
Trump’s decision has sparked debate in the United States as well. Several analysts and political leaders argue that penalizing India is not a strategically wise move and could strain US–India relations. Critics also point out that Washington has not taken similar action against China, which remains the largest buyer of Russian oil.
India has reiterated that its energy policy is guided by national interest. Officials in New Delhi maintain that the country will purchase oil from sources offering the best prices and reliable supply. India has also clarified that its energy trade is not about taking sides but about securing the needs of its economy and citizens.
