‘We Don’t Want War’: Trump Reacts to Xi Jinping’s Taiwan Warning (Image Courtesy: ANI)
Beijing: After his visit to China, US President Donald Trump's view on Taiwan seems to have changed. After meeting Xi Jinping in Beijing, Trump openly warned Taiwan not to make the mistake of declaring independence from China. He clearly said that America does not at all want Taiwan to feel that it will get America's support in this matter.
On the other hand, in this meeting in Beijing, Xi Jinping also did not show any leniency on the issue of Taiwan. He directly told Trump that Taiwan is the most delicate issue in the relations between China and America. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi also said that if this issue is not resolved properly, there could be a direct conflict between the two countries and even war.
In an interview given to Fox News after the end of the China trip, Trump said that America does not want war. He said, “We do not want anyone to think that because America is with him, he should declare himself independent.” Trump also said that there has been no change in America's Taiwan policy and he wants to maintain peace in the region.
The US has long been providing arms and security support to Taiwan. But Washington has always been trying to strike a balance amid increasing tensions with China. Trump's latest statement is being considered an indication that America wants to avoid direct conflict with China for the time being.
The roots of the dispute between China and Taiwan are very old. China considers Taiwan as its part and has also been warning of the use of force if necessary. Taiwan, on the other hand, considers itself an independent and sovereign country. However, Taiwan has not yet formally declared independence.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-tey says that Taiwan is already a sovereign country and there is no need to declare independence separately. But China sees him as a leader who is increasing tension in the region and Beijing considers his thinking dangerous.
Experts believe that the issue of Taiwan may remain the biggest tension in the relations between China and America in the future. However, Trump said that he does not see the possibility of any war at the moment and Xi Jinping also does not want conflict.
