New Delhi: Donald Trump has claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him that China would not take any military step against Taiwan as long as he remained in power. Trump revealed that the assurance came during a meeting between the two leaders in South Korea. According to him, Xi clearly said, “We will never do anything while you are president.” The statement has sparked widespread debate globally, especially at a time when tensions over Taiwan remain high.
Trump explained that his talks with Xi mainly revolved around the US-China trade dispute, but the Taiwan issue was also mentioned. He said Xi gave strong signals that no action would be taken on Taiwan during his term, which made Trump confident that peace would continue in the region. This revelation sheds light on the delicate balance both nations try to maintain over Taiwan.
After Trump’s statement, several analysts have questioned whether Xi truly made such a promise or if Trump is using this politically. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, while Taiwan sees itself as an independent democracy. US officials have long feared that Beijing might one day use military force against the island, but Trump’s claim suggests that fear was held in check during his presidency.
The Taiwan Relations Act, passed in 1979, defines America’s unofficial relationship with Taiwan. It doesn’t compel the US to defend Taiwan militarily but ensures that the island has the necessary weapons and support to protect itself. The law aims to prevent Beijing from making any unilateral change to Taiwan’s status through force.
When asked if he would order US troops to defend Taiwan in case of a Chinese attack, Trump avoided a direct answer. He said, “If it happens, you’ll know.” This reflects America’s long-standing policy of “strategic ambiguity,” where Washington deliberately avoids revealing whether it would step in militarily, keeping China uncertain of the US response.
Experts believe Trump’s statement is not just political but a direct warning to China. By emphasizing that Xi would never act against Taiwan during his term, Trump hinted that China feared the consequences of any aggressive move. The remark underlines his tough stance and sends a message that under his leadership, America’s deterrence remained strong.
Following Trump’s comments, global attention has once again turned toward Taiwan’s safety and regional stability. China has not officially responded, while Washington has remained silent on the details. Still, the statement has revived discussions about whether peace in the Taiwan Strait can last-or if a future confrontation is inevitable.
