Starlink Slowdown Claims Raise Fresh Questions Over US Support for Ukraine (X)
Kyiv: The role of communication technology has become very important in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, a new controversy has emerged regarding the Starlink satellite internet service of Elon Musk's company SpaceX. According to a Wall Street Journal report, there have been allegations of deliberately reducing the speed of the Starlink network used by the Ukrainian military. This development has raised questions about Ukraine's military communications system and American support. However, US officials have denied that Starlink's speed was slowed down by any government order.
The Wall Street Journal report, quoting officials, claimed that Elon Musk had instructed to slow down the Starlink network vital to Ukraine's military operations. According to the report, this development increased concern in Ukraine's capital Kiev and the Trump administration was also surprised by the alleged decision.
However, there is a difference between allegations and official statements in this case. The US administration has not acknowledged any government instructions to slow down Starlink. In such a situation, it is important to understand the circumstances behind the alleged disruption in the network.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the US has not withdrawn Starlink service and has not been instructed to make any changes. He also said that changes to the service may be subject to the satellite provider and its contract terms.
At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also rejected the claims of the White House giving orders to slow down the Starlink network. He clarified the difference between Starlink and Starshield, saying that Starlink is SpaceX's commercial internet service, while Starshield is a separate system belonging to the US military, which is not available to Ukraine.
Ukraine's military has relied on Starlink to maintain battlefield communications and coordinate military activities. It is used in many military operations including intelligence gathering, reconnaissance activities and interceptor drones.
In such a situation, affected internet connectivity may affect communication between soldiers and coordination of various military units. Maintaining reliable communications during a war is vital for Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleged that limiting Ukraine's access to Starlink affected military operations. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he claimed that SpaceX and America had blocked Starlink at 1 am. He said that the parties concerned were aware of the impact their actions could have.
However, these are allegations by Zelensky and US officials have denied giving orders to shut down or slow down the network at the government level.
Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said that Starlink connectivity was being restored to speeds of 160 kilometres per hour. He also expressed the need to remove the speed limit related to Starshield and expressed his gratitude to Elon Musk and expressed hope for further cooperation.
This entire incident has sparked a new debate about the role of private technology companies in the war and the dependence on them for military communications. Starlink availability and terms of service for Ukraine may remain important issues in the future.
