Washington: This time the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw was in the news more due to politics than sports. FIFA President Gianni Infantino surprised everyone by presenting the first FIFA Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. This new award is given to people whom FIFA considers to have made "extraordinary efforts" to unite the world and promote peace.
The awards ceremony was broadcast worldwide. It played a pre-recorded video montage featuring highlights from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and several other leaders. Along with this, clips of Trump's diplomatic statements were also shown. The video said Trump “played a role in facilitating the ceasefire and promoting diplomatic efforts.”
Accepting the award, Trump said it was one of the biggest honors of his life. He claimed that his efforts saved the lives of lakhs of people. Citing examples of Congo, India-Pakistan, and many global disputes, he described himself as playing a key role in establishing peace.
He also praised Infantino and noted FIFA's new records, particularly ticket sales.
Wearing a medal on stage, Trump again described himself as the "President of Peace." He also claimed that because of him major conflicts like Russia-Ukraine and India-Pakistan ended.
Recently he visited the U.S. The name of the Institute of Peace has also been changed to Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace so that it can further strengthen its image.
Infantino stood on the stage and praised Trump, saying the award was given "on behalf of the 5 billion football fans" around the world. Trump's name was also engraved on the trophy, which was said to be a recognition of global peace efforts.
As soon as this announcement was made, discussions started in both sports and political fields. FIFA says the honor is meant to promote peace, but critics question whether it is appropriate to use a platform like football for political messages.
