International News: Harvard University will not have the right to enroll international students for the 2025-26 academic session. The US Homeland Security Department (DHS) has canceled the certification of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) received by Harvard University. The step was taken by DHS Secretary Christie Noem through a letter sent to Harvard on 22 May.

Now F-1 and J-1 will not be able to enroll on visa

According to media reports, after this decision, Harvard University will no longer be able to enroll foreign students under F-1 or J-1 visas. Not only this, foreign students who have already enrolled will also have to transfer to other institutions to maintain their visa status.

What did Christie Noam write in his letter?

Christie Nom said in his letter, "It is necessary for every university to follow the rules of Homeland Security, including the responsibility of reporting under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Harvard had to lose this privilege because there is a hostile atmosphere towards Jewish students, there is a promotion of pro-Hamas ideas, rackets are being applied, and the policies have been applied".

He further wrote, "With the termination of SEVP certification, Harvard will no longer be able to enroll any foreign student on an F or J category visa for the 2025-26 session. Current foreign students will have to transfer to another recognized institution to maintain their visa validity."

Conditions to get certification back

Christie NoM has asked Harvard University to fulfill 6 conditions and provide necessary information within 72 hours to regain SEVP certification. These include:

  • Complete record of illegal activities of foreign students in the last 5 years (within and out of the campus).
  • Information about violent or dangerous activities done by foreign students.
  • Details of all cases in which foreign students have threatened other students or university personnel.
  • All incidents in which foreign students have encroached on the rights of other persons.
  • Disciplinary records of foreign students in the last 5 years.
  • Audio or video recording of protests conducted by foreign students on campus.

Stir in education world

This decision of DHS has created a stir not only in Harvard University but also in the entire academic world of America. Education experts are considering this to be a direct attack on the education and future of foreign students. Many organizations have described this decision as political and termed it the autonomy of the university.

The official response to the matter by Harvard University has not yet come, but sources say the university is considering a legal challenge to the decision.
