New Delhi: A massive fire erupted on Wednesday afternoon inside a large residential complex in Hong Kong. Flames began in one high rise structure and quickly spread to nearby buildings. Witnesses said smoke filled the area within minutes, creating panic among residents. Fire authorities indicated that bamboo scaffolding and construction netting outside the buildings intensified fire movement. Officials have not confirmed the exact cause yet. A special investigation unit has started collecting evidence from the site.
Records show the complex consisted of eight tall blocks. Approximately 2,000 apartments were located within these towers, housing an estimated 4,800 residents. Thick smoke made it difficult for people to escape during the initial spread. By nightfall, flames were visible across several floors. Eyewitness videos showed windows engulfed in bright fire. The incident caused widespread fear. Emergency teams immediately began rescue operations to bring people out safely.
According to fire officials, nine victims were declared dead at the scene. Four others were taken to the hospital but later confirmed deceased by medical staff. Reports state that one firefighter lost his life during the operation. At least fifteen people suffered serious injuries and are receiving treatment. Nearly 700 residents were shifted to temporary shelters for safety. Authorities have not released identities of the deceased yet due to protocol.
Firefighters battled the blaze using multiple high pressure hoses from elevated trucks. The incident was escalated to "level 5 alarm," which is the highest emergency classification. A total of 128 fire engines and 57 ambulances were deployed. Operations continued throughout the night using flood lights and hydro tools to access higher floors. Specialized teams attempted entry using cranes and hydraulic platforms. Drones and thermal imaging were also used to detect hotspots.
The official cause remains unknown at this stage. Preliminary suspicion indicates a possible electrical short circuit or explosion at the construction area. External bamboo structures and plastic covers helped intensify the flames. Fire service authorities have confirmed that forensic experts are examining debris. Investigators will review whether safety protocols were followed. Final conclusions may take time as multiple agencies are involved in testing.
Local administration has set up emergency aid centers for affected families. Injured residents were moved to nearby hospitals immediately. Government representatives indicated that compensation announcements are under evaluation. Officials stated that firefighting efforts are nearly complete, but cooling measures continue. Authorities have advised people living nearby to stay away from the zone due to risk of collapse. The fire has been classified as one of the city's most severe disasters.
Once the flames are fully extinguished, investigators will assess structural damage and determine accountability. Safety engineers are expected to evaluate building condition in upcoming days. Plans for rehabilitation and housing support are being prepared for displaced residents. Several aid groups have offered assistance to the affected families. International leaders expressed condolences over the tragedy. For now, medical care and psychological support for survivors remain top priority.
