According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are more than 4,500 Indian sailors aboard different commercial ships in the region. At the same time, about 163 Indian sailors are present on 12 cargo ships. In such a situation, India is constantly keeping an eye on the safety of sea routes and Indian sailors.
The incident comes at a time when security concerns are heightened in key sea routes such as the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and Black Sea. There is also concern about the safety of sailors amid incidents of attacks on commercial ships.
Last week, at the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had expressed concern about the attacks on commercial ships and sailors. He appealed to reduce tensions, ensure safety of citizens and maintain global trade.
