Washington: Democratic leader Eric Swalwell, who is running for the governorship of California, USA, has become embroiled in serious allegations. Several women have accused him of sexual misconduct, a development that appears to be casting a deepening shadow over his election campaign. However, Swalwell has categorically denied all the allegations.
A former staffer told the media that in 2024, Swalwell sexually assaulted her while she was in an intoxicated state. The woman alleged that she resisted, but Swalwell did not stop. Furthermore, she cited an incident from 2019 involving allegedly non-consensual sexual contact.
Three other women have also leveled various allegations of sexual misconduct against Swalwell. One of these women accused him of non-consensual kissing and touching at a bar, while another claimed he sent her inappropriate messages.

The 45-year-old Congressman, Swalwell, has dismissed all the allegations as baseless. "I am no saint," he stated. He argues that these allegations have surfaced during his election campaign, raising questions regarding the timing of their disclosure. In a statement, he asserted that he has served the public for nearly 20 years and has consistently worked to ensure the safety of women. In a video message, he also offered an apology to his wife; however, while rejecting the allegations, he affirmed that he would defend himself based on the facts.
Swalwell's attorney clarified that his client has never engaged in sexual relations with any member of his staff. His legal team has sent notices to the accusers, labeling their claims as "false" and demanding their retraction, while warning of potential legal action should they fail to comply.
Meanwhile, several senior leaders within the Democratic Party have called upon Swalwell to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi have publicly called upon him to drop out of the race.
Meanwhile, several individuals associated with his election campaign have also resigned. Congressman Jimmy Gomez stepped down as the head of the campaign committee, stating that he could not continue in his role under these circumstances and that Swalwell should withdraw from the race immediately. However, while current Governor Gavin Newsom did describe the allegations as "concerning," he has not issued a direct appeal to Swalwell to withdraw from the election.
Since the matter came to light, political activity in California has intensified, and this controversy could impact electoral dynamics in the days to come.
