New Delhi: A South Korean politician's statement has drawn global condemnation. The party has now taken action against him. Kim Hee-soo, the head of Jindo County for the ruling Democratic Party (DPK), has been expelled from the party. Many have criticized the leader's proposed measures to address the country's declining population as shameful.
According to an RT News report, Kim Hee-soo said that "virgin girls" would have to be imported from abroad to increase the country's population. The party convened a meeting to discuss the situation that arose following Kim's controversial remarks. These statements sparked nationwide outrage and were widely considered inappropriate and derogatory towards women.
Kim Hee-soo, the head of the southern island county, made the controversial remarks last Wednesday during a meeting on administrative unification between South Jeolla Province and Gwangju, the country's sixth-largest metropolis. He said that if Gwangju and South Jeolla are unified, we should enact legislation to address the problem of population decline.
"If this doesn't work, perhaps we should import young virgins from countries like Sri Lanka or Vietnam, so that unmarried men in rural areas can marry," Kim Hee-soo said. These comments immediately went viral, sparking outrage across the country. The official was accused of gender discrimination and inappropriate behavior. Following this, the party decided to expel Kim at a meeting.
