New Delhi: The Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union (EU), dubbed the "Mother of All Deals," has been finalized. This deal deepens trade relations between two billion people worldwide. However, this Free Trade Agreement (FTA) carries a significant message for another global power. At a time when US President Donald Trump is using tariffs and trade as weapons of war, India has sent a clear message to Trump with this largest-ever FTA with the EU: that the only basis for trade partnerships is a rules-based international order, not tariffs driven by threats and penalties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi explicitly discussed this term in his speech. PM Modi stated that the cooperation between India and the European Union is a partnership for global welfare.
Prime Minister Modi clearly conveyed that India advocates for a rules-based international order. It is noteworthy that US President Trump has repeatedly undermined the rules-based international order with his decisions.
"Defense and security cooperation is the foundation of any strategic partnership, and today we are formalizing this with a security and defense partnership. This will further deepen our partnership with the EU in counter-terrorism, maritime security, and cybersecurity. This will also strengthen our shared commitment to a rules-based international order," PM Modi said.
Commenting on the current global situation, PM Modi drew attention to those countries that consider themselves leaders of the world. The Prime Minister said, "Today, there is great upheaval in the global order. In such a situation, the partnership between India and the European Union will strengthen stability in the international system. In this context, today we discussed several global issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific."
Sending a message to Trump and other countries of the world, Prime Minister Modi said that multilateralism and respect for international norms are our shared priorities. Advocating for making global institutions more democratic, PM Modi said, “we agree that reforms of global institutions are essential to address today's challenges. There are times in the relations between nations.”
“There are times in the relations between nations when history itself declares, ‘this is where the direction changed, this is where a new era began’. Today is that moment,” PM Modi added.
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen said that when India succeeds, the world becomes more prosperous, secure, and safe. She said that the world's second and fourth largest economies are partnering. Ursula said this is a message that cooperation and collaboration are the only way forward. Ursula, who had been pushing for a trade deal with India for a long time, sent an indirect message to Trump.
“We have done it and we have signed the 'Mother of All Deals'. This is the story of two giants. We have reduced strategic dependence. This is a historic change. Europe and India will always choose progress,” she said.
European Council President Costa said that at a time when the situation in the world is not good, we are sending a very strong message. The EU and India should work together for mutual prosperity.
“India is the world's largest democracy and fastest-growing economy. The defense and security framework agreement is the first step towards our shared security,” he said.
In the joint statement issued by India and the European Union after this deal, pluralism and the rule of law have also been given prominence.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi co-chaired the 16th India-European Union Summit in New Delhi on January 27, 2026, with President António Costa and President Ursula von der Leyen, and reiterated his commitment to taking the India-EU strategic partnership to a higher level based on shared values and principles, including democracy, human rights, pluralism, the rule of law, and a rules-based international order with the United Nations at its core. They committed to addressing security threats, promoting inclusive and sustainable development, strengthening economic resilience and security, advancing climate and biodiversity action, and accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals," the statement said.
