India NATO dispute: The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that it has seen the statement by the NATO Secretary General referring to an alleged conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin. This claim is completely false and baseless. No such conversation ever took place.
The ministry advised top leaders of international organizations to communicate more responsibly and accurately in public forums. The MEA also clarified that speculative or careless statements that misrepresent the Prime Minister's meetings and interactions are unacceptable.
Speaking to CNN during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mark Rutte said that "Delhi is in constant dialogue with Moscow, and Prime Minister Modi questioned Putin about Russia's Ukraine strategy." Rutte also claimed that India had expressed concern over the 50% tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump, as they were affecting both India and Russia. He said, "Trump's tariffs have had a profound impact on India, and their impact is also being felt in Russia."
This statement comes at a time when the US has raised import duties on Indian exports by up to 50%. Washington says this move is part of a strategy to pressure Russia, as India buys large quantities of Russian crude oil. India, meanwhile, has called the decision "unfair and unjust."
Although talks are underway between India and the US to reduce tariffs, the dispute is not yet resolved. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India's energy policy has always been aligned with national interests. The MEA stated, "India's oil imports are aimed at providing affordable and reliable energy to our people. We will continue to take all necessary steps to safeguard national interests and economic security."
