Abraham Accords Could Expand to Iran, Donald Trump Hints at Historic Shift (Image Courtesy: Instagram)
Washington: US President Donald Trump has given a big statement. Trump says Iran may soon join the Abraham Accords. By writing a post on social media, he thanked the countries of the Middle East and indicated that in future more countries will join this agreement. Trump even wrote, “Who knows, maybe one day Iran will also join.” However, no response has come from Iran on this yet.
The Abraham Accord is a historic agreement signed at the initiative of America in 2020. Its objective was to normalize relations between Arab countries and Israel. Under this deal, UAE and Bahrain first established formal relations with Israel. Later Morocco and Sudan also joined it. Many Arab countries were maintaining distance from Israel for decades. This agreement was considered a major change in the politics of West Asia. America believed that this would bring peace in the region and increase cooperation in trade and security.
This is the biggest problem. Iran and Israel have been each other's sworn enemies. Tension between the two countries has been at its peak since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Tehran has consistently supported anti-Israel organizations such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthi rebels. Iran has already opposed the Abraham Accords. He called it against the interests of Palestine. In such a situation, Trump's statement is surprising many experts.
Some experts believe that behind the scenes talks are going on between Iran and America regarding a nuclear deal. If there is progress in that deal and tension between the two countries reduces, then the political equations may change in the future. Trump is pointing towards his relations with Gulf countries and backdoor diplomacy.
Right now it is just Trump's claim. Iran has maintained silence on this. Most experts in West Asia believe that in the current circumstances it is not easy for Iran to join the Abraham Accords. The nuclear program, hostility towards Israel and the issue of Palestine, all major obstacles. Nevertheless, Trump's statement has sparked a new debate. If this really happens then the entire politics of the Middle East will be overturned. At present, all eyes are on Tehran's response.
