Iran: A mild-moderate earthquake struck near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran on Saturday morning. According to USGS its intensity was 4.1 magnitude. People got a little scared when the shock occurred, but till now there has been no confirmed news of any major destruction or anyone being injured. The area is already prone to earthquakes, so such small tremors are common there.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 75 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas, in Hormozgan Province. The depth was reported to be only 10 kilometers, making it well felt at the surface. According to local time, it came at around 6:48 am (Iran time). USGS has confirmed this, and details are also available on sites like VolcanoDiscovery.

Bandar Abbas is an important port city on the Strait of Hormuz, with heavy oil and ship traffic. There were mild to moderate tremors here. People are saying that everything shook for a while, but shipping or any major structure was not affected. Due to its proximity to nuclear facilities, Iranian authorities watch every small incident closely, especially amid the current tensions. But this time no major damage is visible.
No reports of deaths, injuries or major building collapse so far. At some places things may have fallen or people may have come out, but nothing much. Such a 4.1 earthquake can usually cause aftershocks, but the likelihood of major damage is low. Iran's disaster team will be keeping an eye. Many such small earthquakes keep happening in the area every year, like the recent one of 4.3 in the beginning of March.
Iran is completely in the active zone of plate tectonics. The Arabian and Eurasian plates collide in the Zagros Fault System, so small and large earthquakes are a daily occurrence. This is routine around Bandar Abbas. Both the people and the government remain prepared, because sometimes a bigger one may also come.
Overall, everything seems normal. Hopefully there will be no further major aftershocks. In such a situation, an earthquake is not a surprise in a country like Iran; one just has to be careful.
