UN’s Power Questioned by Iran! Sholay’s Thakur Becomes the Symbol of Reality (Open AI)
Tehran: Amidst the ongoing war between America and Iran and increasing international tension, the Iranian Embassy in India has shared a unique meme regarding the United Nations. The embassy gave a message questioning the role of the United Nations by using the character of Thakur Baldev Singh from the famous Bollywood film 'Sholay'. This post was shared on X on September 29.
In the post of the Iranian Embassy, two photographs have been placed face to face. One side shows an image of Marvel's fictional superhero and neurosurgeon Doctor Strange with multiple arms. It is written above it, “UN according to school books”.
On the other side, there is a picture of Thakur Baldev Singh from the 1975 film 'Sholay', whose character was played by actor Sanjeev Kumar. It is written along with it, “UN in reality”
Thakur loses both his hands in the film 'Sholay'. The Iranian Embassy has used this scene as a symbol of the real role of the United Nations. An attempt has been made through the meme to convey the message that in books and ideally the United Nations is seen as an institution capable of dealing with global crises, but in real circumstances its capacity to act appears limited.
The embassy did not name any specific proposal or event in the post. However, this meme has come out at a time when the conflict between America and Iran is going on and the role of the United Nations is being discussed at the international level.
This post has come to light during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Leaders and representatives of many countries of the world attended the meeting held in New York in September. Issues like global peace and security were discussed, but there was also discussion about the lack of concrete results regarding many major international crises.
This step of Iran has come at a time when tension continues between Tehran and Washington. In such a situation, instead of a formal diplomatic statement, the embassy took the help of a very popular character from Indian cinema and conveyed its message on social media.
This is not the first time that an Iranian diplomatic mission has used Indian cinema and pop culture to send a political message. Recently, the Iranian Consulate in Hyderabad shared a war scene from 'Baahubali: The Beginning'. It was linked to Iranian President Massoud Pejeshkian's message to the United Nations.
Earlier, another diplomatic mission of Iran had also used a meme related to Akshay Kumar in the context of US-Iran tension. These incidents show that Iranian diplomatic missions are using popular Indian films and meme culture to convey messages on social media.
The use of memes, film scenes and popular culture on social media now appears to be a part of digital diplomacy on the part of Iranian embassies and consulates. The meme featuring Thakur from 'Sholay' is also an example of this strategy, in which Iran's message about the effectiveness of the United Nations has been put forward through a famous Indian film scene.
