Tehran: The ongoing conflict between Iran and America has now intensified. Iran retaliated by firing a new batch of ballistic missiles towards US military bases in Jordan after US forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers. Associated Press has given this information quoting Iranian government media.

How many missiles did Iran fire at Jordan?

According to the Jordanian Armed Forces, a total of 20 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran towards the country. Jordan's air defence system intercepted 18 of these missiles in the air. The remaining two missiles fell in areas far from populated areas.

According to the Jordanian army, no casualties were reported in the attack. However, the US Army has not yet clarified whether the US military base in Jordan suffered any damage or not.

Which American base in Jordan did Iran target?

According to the report, Iran's target was Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. This is an important military base located in Jordan, which is used by the US Army for regional operations.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the target was US military assets. These included fighter planes deployed at the airbase.

Why did America destroy five Iranian oil tankers?

This missile attack by Iran occurred shortly after the US military destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the IRGC had twice attempted a ballistic missile attack on a US naval warship in the past two days.

According to the US, its warship survived both the attacks and no American soldier was injured. After this, the US Army targeted five oil tankers belonging to Iran.

Which Iranian oil tankers were destroyed?

The five tankers targeted by the US military include M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco and M/T Derya. Of these, four tankers were targeted in the Gulf of Oman and the fifth near Kharg Island in Iran.

CENTCOM claimed that the crews of these ships were instructed to evacuate before the attack.

Why did the Strait of Hormuz become the centre of conflict?

The effect of increasing tension between America and Iran is also visible on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is considered very important for global energy supply.

The US is increasing naval activities in the region along with limiting Iran's oil exports. Washington alleges that Iran's oil network provides financial support to the IRGC and its regional allies.

Why did Jordan enter this conflict?

Jordan is important to US operations in the Middle East due to its close military cooperation with the US and its strategic geographical location. There are many American military facilities in the country and Muwaffaq Salti Air Base also plays an important role in them.

However, Jordan has consistently maintained that it is not a party to this war. Despite this, as regional conflict increases, Jordan is also facing the threat of missile and drone attacks.
