Tehran: A major maritime attack took place near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday amid tensions in West Asia. Two UAE-flagged oil tankers were hit by missiles. One Indian crew member was killed and several people were injured in this attack. After the incident, concerns about security in the area have increased further.
According to the UAE defence ministry, two tankers named 'Mombasa' and 'Bahia' were passing through the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz in the maritime area of Oman. Then missiles were fired at them. Both ships caught fire after the attack. After a lot of effort, the fire could be controlled.
The defence ministry said that an Indian working on the tanker 'Mombasa' died. Apart from this, 8 people are injured, out of whom the condition of 4 is critical. The injured include 6 Indians and 2 Ukrainian nationals. Everyone is undergoing treatment.
The UAE government has strongly condemned the attack. The government described it as a "violation of international law". The UAE said such actions were a threat to the peace and maritime security of the region. It also made it clear that it will take necessary steps to protect its interests, citizens and sea routes. The defence ministry also said that their army is on full alert.
Before the attack, Iran had said that its Revolutionary Guards had conducted "warning firing" to stop two ships passing through Hormuz. According to Iranian media, these ships were accused of "illegal movement" and a signal was given to stop them. But the UAE has refused to accept this.
It is the busiest sea route in the world. Most of the crude oil and gas coming out of Gulf countries goes to the whole world through this route. Therefore, even a small incident here has a direct impact on oil prices, maritime trade and international politics.
After this attack, tension in West Asia may increase further. Maritime security agencies are keeping an eye on the situation. Countries around the world are also watching this development carefully.
