International News: The geography of the Middle East resonated once again when Israel launched a major military operation on Iran today. The attack was named "Operation Rising Lion," under which Israeli fighter jets targeted Iran's nuclear centers, missile manufacturing sites, and military bases. There were reports of loud explosions in cities like the capital Tehran, Natanz, and Isfahan. Images of smoke and flames went viral on social media, triggering widespread panic across the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the attack "a historic and decisive step." He claimed that Iran is now very close to making nuclear weapons, and it is a threat to the whole world. Netanyahu said, "We cannot sit silent when our existence is in danger." This attack is being seen as a 'Preemptive Strike' i.e., an action taken before the potential threat.
On the other hand, Iran has strongly condemned the attack. The Iranian government spokesperson condemned the attack as "direct aggression" and warned that Iran's response would be both decisive and swift. There is speculation that Iran may launch retaliatory attacks through Hezbollah and other proxy groups. Also, there is a possibility of cyberattacks and missile retaliation.
After this attack, all eyes were on the US, but US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the US is not involved in this operation. He said that the US's priority is only the safety of its troops and diplomatic bases. However, the US has withdrawn its non-essential staff from Iraq, Jordan, and the Gulf countries and has kept its military bases on high alert.
The tension between Iran and Israel is long-standing and deeply rooted. This confrontation, which started with a Hamas attack in 2023, gradually spread to Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. Israel attacked Iranian bases in Syria several times, and Iran also directly threatened to respond to Israel. Now, this proxy war is becoming an open conflict.
The situation is extremely delicate. Experts believe that if Iran takes a big step in retaliation, this conflict could take the form of a full-fledged regional war. The United Nations and European countries have appealed for restraint, but the tension on the ground is increasing day by day. Now it remains to be seen whether diplomacy can extinguish this fire or the Middle East is ready to burn in the fire of another war.
