New Delhi: The situation in Asia has once again become tense. Japan has alleged that Chinese warplanes locked fire-control radar on its military jets, in what is considered the most dangerous warning before any possible military action. Japan's Defense Ministry says that this incident occurred near Okinawa when the Chinese Navy's J-15 fighter jet came very close to Japan's F-15 aircraft and locked the radar. Tokyo says that such actions are a direct security challenge for them.

Japan expressed strong protest; China said – the truth is being distorted

Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi issued a strong statement after the incident. He said fire-control radar lock is a threat to the safe flight of any pilot and cannot be ignored. Japan has officially sought a response from China. During a meeting with Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles in Tokyo, Koizumi said his country wanted peace in the region, but such provocative actions would be responded to appropriately.

China dismissed Japan's allegations as one-sided, saying its planes were conducting previously announced carrier-based training. The Chinese military claims that Japanese aircraft kept coming unnecessarily close to their navy, leading to a tense situation. China argues that Japan itself is complicating the matter and spreading unnecessary tension in the region.

Why did the Okinawa dispute increase uneasiness?

This incident took place in the same area which both the countries claim to be under their jurisdiction. Because of this the matter has become more sensitive. Japanese media says that relations between the two countries have continuously deteriorated in the last few months. Especially since Japan had said that any military action by China on Taiwan would also be considered a threat to Japan's security. China had strongly objected to this statement and warned Japan not to "cross the line". This latest incident of tension between the two countries is being considered a part of the same background.

China claims – We did not enter Japanese airspace

Chinese navy spokesman Wang Juemeng said their planes did not enter Japan's airspace and that Japan was trying to portray itself as a victim. He says that China will continue to take necessary steps for its security. Chinese military analysts have also described Japan's allegations as "political rhetoric."

Increased distance increased tension regarding Taiwan

Tension seems to be increasing between China and Japan on the Taiwan issue for some time. China has advised its citizens to avoid travel to Japan and has also put on hold plans to withdraw restrictions on the import of marine products.
Taiwan is just 110 kilometers away from Yonaguni Island, Japan. In such a situation, any military activity taking place in the region has a direct impact on the security of both the countries. For this reason, concerns regarding the Okinawa incident have increased further.
