A tragic incident occurred in Karachi's Lyari neighbourhood when a six-storey residential building collapsed in the Baghdadi locality. So far, 16 people have lost their lives, and over 20 individuals are still believed to be trapped under the debris.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to save those caught under the rubble. Officials report that nine people, including five women, have been pulled out alive but injured. They are currently receiving medical care. Earlier, 19 people were rescued, with eight dying at the scene and one passing away at the hospital. Three survivors are still at the SMBB Trauma Centre's hospital, while 6 survivors have been discharged from the hospital.

Officials React and Blame Negligence

About 20 more individuals may still be trapped, according to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and search operations are still underway. Meanwhile, Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, who visited the site after over 13 hours, pointed fingers at residents living in unsafe structures, stating that the building was already marked hazardous by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).

The commissioner explained that notices were sent earlier to evacuate the building, but residents claim they never received any warning. Nearby buildings have also been damaged due to the collapse.

Government Response and Investigation

The SBCA has listed 578 unsafe buildings in Karachi, mainly in District South. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed his concern and has instructed officials to use all available resources for rescue operations. In addition, he issued a warning against any negligence and ordered medical assistance for the injured.

A committee has been formed by the Sindh Local Government Department to investigate the incident. The panel has been given three days to find out who was responsible. Additionally, SBCA officials connected to the collapsed building have been suspended by the local government minister.
