Toronto: News regarding a letter linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has created a sensation. This letter was sent to authorities in Canada. According to reports, in this letter, Bishnoi's gang claimed to possess 1,000 armed fighters ready to target the South Asian diaspora community.

According to the Canadian broadcaster Global News, this letter was sent in August of last year. While testifying before the Immigration and Refugee Board on Thursday, an Edmonton police constable disclosed details regarding the letter. It had been sent to a police station in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

When Was the Letter Sent?

According to Police Constable Kevin St. Louis, the letter bears the date August 13, 2025. Furthermore, it provides information about a gang being operated from within a jail cell. St. Louis stated that the letter claims the gang is massive and heavily armed. Additionally, in a threatening tone, it asserts that the gang has demanded a "tax" from every business. The gang describes this payment as a form of "protection money."

The Abbotsford Police Department has also confirmed these details. Sergeant Paul Walker told the media that information regarding the letter has also been shared with federal and provincial agencies, which are currently investigating cases related to extortion. Meanwhile, the department's "Operation Community Shield" task force is actively working to determine the letter's origin.

What is the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang?

It is noteworthy that Lawrence Bishnoi is a criminal from Rajasthan who has been incarcerated since 2015. Despite his imprisonment, his gang remains active. It maintains connections with criminal networks across Punjab and Haryana. Bishnoi faces allegations of running the gang from behind bars using smuggled mobile phones and similar devices. Canadian authorities officially designated the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization in September 2025. The gang is alleged to be involved in murders, shootings, arson, and extortion. It is alleged that the Bishnoi gang is behind the surge in criminal cases targeting businesspeople and professionals of Indian origin.

The gang's activities are particularly prevalent in British Columbia's Lower Mainland (specifically Surrey and Abbotsford), as well as in Alberta, Ontario, and Manitoba. Reports indicate that the gang demands extortion money via WhatsApp calls or messages. If there is a delay in payment, assailants on motorcycles open fire. The gang's shooters include Indian nationals residing in Canada on temporary visas or student permits; the gang recruits them by offering a meager monetary payment.

What About Terrorism in Canada?

In Canada, the Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for targeted attacks on business owners. This has heightened fear within those communities that have successfully established themselves in various business sectors across the country. Given the gang's active presence, residents in these areas have begun demanding increased security. Some families are even considering relocating to other places. Police task forces in the affected cities have issued alerts, while in areas such as Surrey, rewards have been announced for information leading to arrests.
