Network Connectivity Disrupted as Microsoft Confirms Red Sea Subsea Cable Cuts (Image Source: Reuters)

Microsoft announced on Saturday that a number of Azure users might experience reduced connection speeds due to damage to multiple undersea fibre cables in the Red Sea. In a service update, the company said that customers could face increased delays when data moves between the Middle East and Asia or Europe.

Damage to multiple cables disrupts internet traffic

On September 6, several undersea fibre optic cables in the Red Sea were cut at the same time, disturbing global internet and communication networks. Although connections are still working, rerouted traffic has led to slower speeds and heavier congestion on key paths.

Microsoft’s plan to manage the issue

The company noted that fixing undersea fibre cuts usually takes time. In the meantime, Microsoft said it will keep watching, rebalancing, and improving its routing to limit effects on customers. It also promised to share daily updates or sooner if the situation changes.
