This is big news in itself because Christa is believed to be the only person in American history to survive a lethal injection.

Touching and coming back from the death

Krista Pike was sentenced to death at just 18 years old for the murder she and her then-boyfriend committed. A week ago, she was given two lethal doses of pentobarbital in a Tennessee prison. However, she survived the injections . She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was unconscious and in critical condition on a ventilator. Her lawyers said on Tuesday that despite the difficult circumstances, she is now conscious, talking, and receiving ongoing critical medical care.

"Despite serious injuries to his hands, he is still handcuffed and shackled to his bed... His recovery has been unprecedented from a medical perspective. His recovery is still uncertain, but we at least hope it will be a long one," the lawyers said in a statement.

Her lawyers again urged Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute Pike's sentence to life imprisonment. Governor Lee has suspended executions in the state pending an independent investigation. Following this, the prison chief resigned.

This is the first time this has happened

The Death Penalty Information Center publishes data and analysis related to the death penalty in the United States. It said Pike is the first inmate to survive a lethal injection. Deborah Deno, a professor and criminologist at Fordham Law School, said she was surprised to find Pike conscious and talking. Deno told the BBC that there have been seven other cases where inmates survived a scheduled execution or death sentence, but in those cases, no intravenous injection was administered. In this case, Krista Pike survived despite being given a lethal injection.
