International News: In Nepal, students and youth have been on the streets for the last few days. The protest outside the Parliament turned violent in which the police fired tear gas and rubber bullets. 19 people died in this clash. After this, the situation worsened further and Oli surprised everyone by resigning.
Countries like America, Japan and South Korea including India did not support the Oli government. On the contrary, these countries supported the peaceful movement. This increased the pressure on the Oli government. Diplomatic sources believe that when support was not received from big countries, resignation was the only option left.
On Oli's resignation, India said that it is closely monitoring the events in Nepal. India expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the violence and wished the injured a speedy recovery. India also advised Indian citizens living in Nepal to remain vigilant.
America, Britain, Japan and other countries condemned the violence. They clearly said that peaceful protest is the right of the people. These countries appealed to the Nepal government to exercise restraint and avoid any kind of provocative action. This further weakened the international image of the Oli government.
Oli became the Prime Minister of Nepal thrice but could not strengthen relations with India. He always made agreements with China. Especially in 2015-16, he made a transit agreement with China which reduced India's traditional influence. This image of his became anti-India and pro-China.
In 2020, the Oli government released a new map showing Indian territories like Lipulekh and Kalapani as part of Nepal. India rejected it outright. This move further deteriorated the relations between the two countries. After this, political instability increased and now the fall of his government was certain.
Oli's resignation has brought Nepal's politics to a new turn. Now the question is whether the next government will be able to improve relations with India or will move closer to China. The student movement has also shown that the new generation wants change. In the coming times, the voice of the youth will decide the path of Nepal.
