International News: A horrifying incident has unfolded in Nigeria. Gunmen ambushed security personnel in the northwestern Zamfara state, killing eight soldiers. The attackers fled the scene after the attack, the state governor shared this information on Friday.
Governor Dawda Lawal said in a statement on Facebook that the attack occurred on Thursday in the Tsafe region of Zamfara state, killing five police officers and three members of a paramilitary group. No group has immediately claimed responsibility. Local police and other authorities are working to track down the attackers. The attackers will not be spared under any circumstances.
Such attacks are reportedly common in Nigeria's northern region, where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water. Farmers accuse the herders of grazing their cattle in fields and destroying their crops. "We pray to God that this problem ends in Zamfara State and Nigeria," Lawal said on Facebook.
Buhari Morki, a local resident, said the attackers were hiding in bushes along the roadside, where security personnel usually patrol. They then opened fire on eight soldiers, leaving them without a chance to recover. The attackers then fled. The incident caused panic in the area, and a large police force arrived at the scene.
Nigeria is also struggling to control Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast, where, according to the United Nations, approximately 35,000 civilians have been killed and more than 2 million displaced. Similar attacks have occurred several times before. In one instance, attackers even attacked a mosque, killing approximately 27 people.
