According to reports, Hamza Burhan was shot by an unidentified assailant in Muzaffarabad. The incident took place while the terrorist was sitting in his office located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Hamza Burhan was among the conspirators behind the Pulwama attack. He claimed to be a teacher in Pakistan and had been involved in numerous terrorist incidents since 2019. He was providing training to various terrorist organizations in the PoK region and also assisted terrorists in infiltrating across the border areas.

In retaliation for the Pulwama attack, India executed 'Operation Balakot,' penetrating into Pakistan to destroy terrorist hideouts.

The Pulwama terror attack of 2019 shook the entire nation to its core. Now, a major update has emerged regarding that very same terror incident. Reports indicate that Hamza Burhanโ€”the alleged mastermind behind the attackโ€”was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Hamza succumbed to his injuries in the attack. Hamza Burhan had been living in hiding in Pakistan for a long time, posing as a teacher. The Pulwama attack is considered one of India's most devastating terror strikes, in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. However, he was not the sole culprit; several other terrorists were also involved in this conspiracy.

What Happened During the Pulwama Terror Attack?

According to India's investigative agencies, the entire conspiracy behind the Pulwama attack was hatched from Pakistan, with Hamza Burhan and his accomplices playing key roles. Specifically, on February 14, 2019, a suicide attack was carried out against a CRPF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway. A vehicle laden with explosives was rammed into a security forces' bus. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of 40 personnel and left many others injured. The terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack. Subsequent investigations revealed that preparations for this attack had been underway for several months.

What Did Investigation by the NIA Reveal?

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a comprehensive probe into this case. The agency filed a voluminous chargesheetโ€”spanning approximately 13,500 pagesโ€”in a special court in Jammu. A total of 19 accused individuals were named in this chargesheet, including top terrorist masterminds associated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed. The NIA unraveled the entire conspiracy based on electronic evidence, call records, digital chats, and interrogations of arrested terrorists.

According to the investigative agency, the conspiracy behind the Pulwama attack was hatched with the support of the Pakistan-based terror organization Jaish-e-Mohammed and that country's intelligence agency, the ISI. The investigation also revealed that the explosives and vehicles used in the attack, as well as the movements of the terrorists, were being directed from across the border. In its charge sheet, the NIA detailed the roles played by several Pakistani terrorists and their accomplices.

How many Pulwama Terror Attack acused have been killed?

According to the NIA's investigation, security forces eliminated several of the 19 accused involved in this case during various separate operations. These included key terrorists such as the attack's main conspirator, Mohammad Umar Farooq; Qari Yasir; Mudassir Khan; and Sajjad Bhat. All of them were affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and were active in Kashmir. Security forces eliminated these terrorists during operations conducted in 2019 and the years that followed. In totalโ€”aside from Hamza Burhanโ€”several prominent terrorists, including Masood Azhar's relative Abdul Rashid Ghazi, have been killed by security forces or unidentified gunmen.

Additionally, seven accused individuals were arrested. These individuals faced charges of harboring terrorists, supplying weapons and logistics, concealing explosives, and assisting in the planning of the attack. The investigation also brought to light the involvement of several local "Overground Workers" (OGWs). Some of the accused assisted in recording the video of the suicide bomber, Adil Dar, and in providing safe hideouts to the terrorists.

Four key accused individuals in this case remain at large. These include Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar, his brother Maulana Rauf Asghar, Ammar Alvi, and Ashiq Ahmed Nengroo. According to Indian agencies, all of them are currently hiding in Pakistan. Masood Azhar has long been regarded as the mastermind behind terrorist activities directed against India. Following the Pulwama attack, India also raised the issue of Pakistan providing patronage to terrorists on various international platforms.

What was India's Response to the Pulwama Terror Attack?

In the wake of the Pulwama attack, India adopted a more aggressive strategy in its fight against terrorism. The Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan, which was widely regarded as a retaliation for the Pulwama attack. Following this operation, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated significantly. To this day, the Pulwama attack remains a potent symbol of the nation's security apparatus and its ongoing battle against terrorism.

Why are Indian Agencies on Alert?

Now, following reports of the death of Hamza Burhan, the terrorist network linked to the Pulwama attack has grabbed the spotlight once again. However, no official or definitive statement regarding this matter has yet been issued by Pakistan. Nevertheless, security experts believe that several perpetrators behind the Pulwama attack remain at large. India's investigative agencies continue to maintain a constant vigil over these terrorists and their associated networks.
