New Delhi: The partnership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni - labelled 'Melodi' by the media - has grabbed headlines once again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have co-authored a blog post discussing the relations, economic growth, and cooperation between their two nations. This blog delves in detail into the economic dynamism, social creativity, and millennia-old civilizational understanding shared by both countries.
Both world leaders have written: "'Made in Italy' has always stood as a global symbol of excellence, and today, it is forging a natural partnership with the high-quality objectives of the 'Make in India' initiative. In this context, the growing interest of Italian companies in manufacturing within India—along with the increasing presence of Indian industries in Italy—serves as a positive indicator that will further strengthen the integration of our supply chains. The article notes that the number of such companies on both sides has now exceeded 1,000."
PM Modi is currently in Italy on Wednesday, marking the final leg of his foreign tour. During this visit, discussions between the two nations are expected to cover a wide range of issues.
In this article, both leaders observe that the relationship between India and Italy has now reached a decisive phase. In recent years, bilateral ties have witnessed unprecedented momentum, evolving beyond a cordial friendship into a true strategic partnership grounded in shared values of liberty, democracy, and a common vision for the future.
The article further states: "At a time when the international order is undergoing profound transformation, the partnership between Italy and India is moving beyond regular dialogue at high political and institutional levels to acquire a new and comprehensive dimension—one that weaves together our economic dynamism, social creativity, and millennia-old civilizational understanding. Our cooperation reflects a shared understanding that, in the 21st century, prosperity and security will be determined by a nation's capacity for innovation, its management of the energy transition, and its ability to bolster strategic sovereignty. With this objective in mind, we have resolved to further deepen and diversify our bilateral relations, thereby enabling us to achieve new milestones and leverage our complementary capabilities more effectively."
In this blog, both Prime Ministers highlight that the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and India paves the way for boosting trade and investment in both directions between the two nations. Our goal is to achieve—and surpass—a bilateral trade target of 20 billion Euros between Italy and India by 2029. To this end, focus will be placed on various sectors, including defense and aerospace, clean technology, machinery, automotive components, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agri-food, and tourism.
"Made in Italy" has long stood as a global symbol of excellence; today, it finds a natural partnership with the high-quality objectives of the "Make in India" initiative. In this context, the growing interest of Italian companies in manufacturing within India—along with the expanding presence of Indian industries in Italy (with the total number of companies on both sides now exceeding 1,000)—serves as a positive indicator that will further strengthen the integration of our supply chains.
Both leaders note that India's Digital Public Infrastructure has already established a strong footprint across numerous countries, particularly within the Global South. Artificial Intelligence, in particular, is now exerting a profound influence on both our societies and the global economy. Italy and India have long collaborated to ensure that AI development remains responsible and human-centric. From this shared perspective, India and Italy view AI as a powerful catalyst for inclusive growth—especially for the Global South—where Digital Public Infrastructure and accessible multilingual technologies can serve to bridge divides rather than widen them.
Drawing upon India's 'MANAV' vision—which places the human being at the very center of technology—and Italy's pioneering role in promoting a human-centric "Algor-ethics" rooted in humanist traditions, our partnership aims to ensure that AI serves as a true instrument of social empowerment. Our vision combines India’s digital capabilities with Italy’s ethical and industrial expertise, ensuring that technology serves human dignity.
PM Modi and PM Meloni affirmed that we can address our shared challenges through a deep partnership grounded in the enduring cultural ties between our two nations. In Indian culture, the concept of "Dharma" embodies the sense of responsibility that should underpin our actions, while the principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"—meaning "the whole world is one family"—resonates deeply in today's interconnected digital age.
Such values are also naturally reflected in Italy’s humanist tradition, rooted in the Renaissance era, which places great value on the dignity of every individual and on the power of culture to connect societies and people.
