Dhaka: The Hindu minority community and students of Dhaka University in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka staged a protest demanding the resumption of construction work on the largest statue of Lord Ram in Gaibandha district.

What is the reason of protest?

Protesters protested pressure and threats from fundamentalist groups over the construction of a proposed 81-feet-tall statue of Lord Rama in Gaibandha's Palashbari subdistrict. The statue construction committee has temporarily halted work amid rising tensions.

Minority groups in Bangladesh are demanding action against threats posed by a project to build the country's largest statue of Lord Ram in Gaibandha's Palashbari upazila.

What did the official say?

In light of growing tensions surrounding the project, project organisers have announced a temporary suspension of construction work. This decision was announced at a press conference earlier this month.

Speaking to the media, Haridas Chandra Das, founder and president of the temple committee of the Gaibandha Palashbari Komorpur Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple, said, "We are building a statue of one of the main sources of strength of Sanatan Dharma, Lord Ram. In the 81 feet statue, we have completed around 80 per cent work, but some radical groups are now pressurising us to stop construction."

"We are scared and in fear and out of fear we have kept the work suspended. I want to appeal to the PM, Honourable Tarique Rahman and to law and order authorities and to civil society to ensure we can complete the work," he added.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council Central Committee has called upon the government to curb the ongoing communal threats and urged the government to take immediate and effective measures to end these incidents.
