Moscow: Russia has unexpectedly responded positively to the new national security strategy released by US President Donald Trump. Moscow says that there are many points in this document that are very similar to the Kremlin's thinking. This is believed to be the strongest endorsement from Russia on any US strategy paper, especially since the end of the Cold War.
In the new strategy, Trump has introduced the concept of “Flexible Realism.” Along with this, it has also been indicated that America wants to strongly reimplement the Monroe Doctrine, according to which the Western Hemisphere is considered the sphere of American influence.
Another key part of the strategy is a warning about Europe, saying the continent faces the threat of “civilizational decline.” Washington has placed talks to end the Ukraine war among its “key priorities.” Additionally, America has also said that it wants to restore strategic stability with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on state TV that the changes reflected in the strategy "in many respects coincide with our approach." He particularly appreciated the part that called for preventing both the perception and reality of NATO's continued expansion.
Peskov also said that America's "deep state," i.e., long-established political and bureaucratic groups, has a different perspective from Trump's. Trump has previously claimed that such institutions try to weaken leaders who challenge the established structure.
Russia was projected as a destabilizing force in US strategies after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But this time Peskov told the TASS agency that the offer of cooperation on strategic stability could be seen as “a positive sign.”
According to the strategy, the US is considering the Indo-Pacific as the main area of economic and military competition and wants to strengthen its capabilities to prevent conflict with China. At the same time, Russia, which is facing heavy sanctions due to the Ukraine war, is strengthening its relations with China as Europe is gradually reducing its dependence on Russian energy.
Trump also recently said that history shows that the uniting of Russia and China is not a good sign for the world.
America and Russia have been generally at odds with each other for many decades. After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, cooperation between the two countries increased for a few years, but it did not last long.
Relations remained increasingly tense due to NATO expansion, European politics, and Putin's rise to power. In such a situation, Russia's open agreement on Trump's new strategy is being considered an unusual and interesting development in international politics.
