Ukraine has launched a massive drone attack on the Russian capital, Moscow, involving more than 500 drones. Citing local and military officials, Russia's state-run news agency TASS reported on Sunday that Ukraine attacked Russia with over 500 drones overnight, an assault that resulted in the deaths of at least three people near Moscow.
According to TASS, based on information provided by the city's mayor, this strike on Moscow marks the "largest attack in over a year." This Ukrainian offensive is being described as a retaliatory measure; just last week, Russia had targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in an attack that Ukrainian officials stated claimed the lives of 25 people.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that on Sunday night, a woman was killed when a drone crashed into a house in Khimki—a city located northwest of the Russian capital. He further noted that another individual remained trapped beneath the rubble. Sobyanin added that two men died in Mytishchi, located northeast of Moscow, when drone debris fell onto a house under construction. He further stated that a total of 12 people were injured across Moscow, including a construction worker employed at an oil refinery.
Russia's Ministry of Defense stated that it intercepted 556 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Mayor Sobyanin claimed that air defense forces shot down over 120 drones that were heading toward Moscow and its surrounding areas. According to the TASS report, falling drone debris sparked a fire at a house in the village of Subbotino, while in the western city of Istra, four people were injured after drones damaged several residential buildings. Some drone fragments also landed within the premises of Sheremetyevo Airport—Russia's busiest airport—though airport officials have stated that there are no reports of any injuries or structural damage resulting from the incident.
TASS posted photos on Telegram of a house engulfed in flames. Along with this, it also shared images of several damaged apartment blocks, regarding which no further details were provided. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 287 drones overnight, injuring at least nine people across the Dnipropetrovsk region and the Zaporizhzhia district. It further stated that it shot down all but eight of these drones across seven different locations.
