Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Jail in Bangladesh — First Conviction Since Coup (Source: ANI (File Photo))
Bangladesh’s deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday, has been sentenced to six months in prison in a contempt of court case by the Judicial Body, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), according to a local media report.
In the past, several allegations have been made against Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since the coup.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Murtuza Majumdar delivered this verdict on Wednesday. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Mohammad Shafiul Alam Mahmood and Judge Mohammad Mohitul Haque Inam Chowdhury. In the same case, another accused, Shakil Akand Bulbul alias Mohammad Shakil Alam from Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, has been sentenced to two months in jail.
Multiple cases are ongoing against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. She faces serious charges ranging from corruption to murder. Anti-Hasina groups have even demanded that she be brought back from India and sentenced to death. On Tuesday, the International Crimes Tribunal began a hearing to frame charges against the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three others in a crime against humanity case related to the July uprising.
The Yunus government of Bangladesh has repeatedly requested India to send Sheikh Hasina back. However, India has not responded to these requests. It is worth noting that India and Bangladesh had very good relations during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, but since her ousting, there has been a certain distance between the two countries.
