Sheikh Hasina Confirms Bangladesh Comeback, Slams Death Sentence as Politically Motivated (X)

Dhaka: Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has given a big statement regarding her future. Hasina, who is living in India, said that she will return to her country this year and will continue the struggle for the restoration of democracy. She made it clear that her return would not be for any personal ambition but for the purpose of strengthening the rights of the people of Bangladesh and the democratic system. Reacting to the death sentence awarded against her, she termed it illegal, unconstitutional and completely politically motivated.

Why did the need arise to leave the country?

The situation had deteriorated rapidly during the anti-reservation movement in Bangladesh last year. The protests turned violent and the crowd reached the Prime Minister's residence in the capital Dhaka. Due to security reasons Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country and came to India. After this her government fell and the interim administration took power. Later, after the general elections, a new government was formed, but the political situation of the country is still not considered completely normal.

What was said about the return?

In an interview, Hasina said that her politics was never about power. Her aim has always been to strengthen democracy in Bangladesh and fight for the rights of the people. Despite all the difficulties his intention did not change. She expressed confidence that she will return to Bangladesh by the end of this year and will stay there and work among the people.

What did she say on death penalty?

Hasina directly attacked the decision against her. She said that this is not justice, this is political revenge. The law is being used to crush opponents. This decision is neither right according to the Constitution nor according to justice. She said that I am not afraid of death. I have faced death many times in my life and faced it with courage every time.

What did she say about Awami League?

Sheikh Hasina said that Awami League is not just a party. It is related to the freedom struggle of Bangladesh. In the past years, there have been many attacks on the party, leaders were killed and attempts were made to break it. But every time the party stood up again on the strength of the public. She is confident that the people of Bangladesh will save democracy and political stability will return to the country.

Can India-Bangladesh relations be affected?

Political analysts believe that if Sheikh Hasina returns, its impact will not be limited only to the domestic politics of Bangladesh. It may also affect the relations between India and Bangladesh. During Hasina's tenure, cooperation between the two countries was strengthened in many areas such as security, trade, energy, connectivity and border management.

In such a situation, the announcement of his return is being considered an important development in the politics of South Asia. The political direction of Bangladesh in the coming months will largely depend on how Hasina implements her comeback plan and what stance the current government takes on it.
