Former Prime Minister
Gen Z protests: Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who was removed from power due to the youth-led Gen Z protests against corruption in Nepal, has made his first public statement since his resignation. He made it clear through a long post on Facebook that he will not compromise at any cost on issues related to Nepal's sovereignty and nationalism.
Oli said in his post that disputed areas like Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are integral parts of Nepal and Nepal will always claim them as Nepal's. He also reiterated that the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram is in Nepal, not in India. He says that his adamant stand on these issues forced him to lose power, but he will not back down from it. Political analysts believe that Oli is trying to regain public support by resorting to nationalist sentiments.
In his statement on September 10, Oli also clarified that he is still in Nepal and is temporarily staying in the Shivpuri barracks of the Nepal Army. He said that removing him from power was a conspiracy of external powers and he will continue to oppose it.
In an open letter to his party, Oli said that he knows that he is stubborn by nature, but this stubbornness gives him the strength to stand firm even in the midst of challenges. He said that he had taken the initiative to get local registration and follow the rules from social media companies active in Nepal, due to which he had to face opposition. He also said that if he had bowed down on sensitive issues like Lipulekh, Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lord Ram's birthplace, he would not have had any difficulty in maintaining his position and prestige, but he gave priority to the state interest.
Oli wrote that if I had not sent the new map of Limpiyadhura to the United Nations, or had let others take decisions for me, my life could have been easier. But I dedicated everything to the nation. Personal benefits or position never mattered to me.
Violence is continuously increasing during the ongoing Gen Z movement in Nepal. The Health Ministry has confirmed that so far 34 protesters have lost their lives. At the same time, according to official figures, 1,338 people are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country.
