New Delhi: A Chinese-led international team of geologists has accurately predicted earthquakes in at least 83 percent of cases, according to a research report. According to the report, between 2022 and 2024, Chinese scientists predicted earthquakes at 12 locations and issued risk alerts. In 10 of these locations, tremors were felt within three months of the prediction.

According to the South China Morning Post, approximately 83 percent of the predictions proved accurate. In most cases, the epicenter was exactly where the predictions were made. This raises the question: is it possible to predict earthquakes?

How was the data collected for prediction?

According to the peer-reviewed journal, a team of scientists from China, Taiwan and Brazil collected data from seismometers, magnetometers and ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System receivers to predict earthquakes.

Based on this data, scientists say that earthquakes are not unexpected events. Information can be gathered in advance and people can be alerted.

The scientists collected all their data based on China. Professor Chen Chieh-hung of Chengdu University, who headed the team, says that one-third of the world's earthquakes occur in China.

According to Chen, more work is still needed to improve accuracy. Currently, we can only reach areas where earthquakes are likely. Overall, earthquake prediction is possible.

Why is this research important for the world?

Earthquakes kill 40,000 people worldwide every year. A major reason for this death is the lack of accurate earthquake forecasting. Accurate forecasting can help save lives in time. Scientists around the world have been researching this issue for a long time.

Now, a new report has raised hopes that earthquake prediction is possible. However, accurate predictions may still take time.
