solar eclipse (Social Media)
International News: The world is preparing to witness a spectacular celestial event that happens only once in centuries. A rare total solar eclipse is scheduled to occur on August 2, 2027, marking one of the longest solar eclipses in the past 100 years. This extraordinary phenomenon will be visible in various parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
What makes this solar eclipse particularly significant is its exceptional duration. According to astronomers, the total eclipse will last for 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making it the longest total solar eclipse since 743 BC, when an eclipse lasted 7 minutes and 28 seconds. Such a long period of total darkness during the day is extremely rare and has excited scientists and skywatchers around the world.
During the eclipse, the Moon will completely block the Sun, plunging the daytime into darkness across a wide path. This unusual scene is expected to be visible across several countries, offering a unique opportunity for researchers, astronomers, and enthusiasts alike. The darkness in broad daylight, lasting several minutes, will be an unforgettable spectacle.
The path of totality—the region where the eclipse will be fully visible—will span approximately 275 kilometers in width, crossing multiple continents. The eclipse will begin over the Atlantic Ocean, move across southern Spain, and then continue through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. Afterward, it will move across the Red Sea, covering parts of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia.
Cities like Cádiz and Málaga in southern Spain are expected to experience complete darkness for more than four minutes. Near the historic city of Luxor in Egypt, the total eclipse will last for the full six minutes.
Unfortunately, this rare solar eclipse will not be visible in India or nearby regions. Indian skywatchers will have to rely on online streams or travel to other parts of the world to witness the event. Ideal viewing locations include Benghazi in Libya, Luxor in Egypt, and Lampedusa Island in Italy.
Experts say the next chance to witness such a long-duration total solar eclipse won’t come until the year 2114, making the 2027 eclipse a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most.
