International News: South Korea's politics went through a very dramatic turn, but democracy ultimately won. Liberal Party leader Lee Jae-myung has won a decisive victory in the presidential election held amid military rule and fear of coup. At the same time, his rival and former coup-supporting conservative leader Kim Moon-soo accepted defeat with a big heart and congratulated him from an open platform, respecting democratic values.
Kim Moon-soo told the media, "I humbly accept the decision of the people of the country. I heartily congratulate Lee Jae-myung on becoming the president." This statement gave a positive political message in the country and assured the public that South Korea's democracy is still alive.
While the election results determined the direction of power, Kim Moon-soo's calm and dignified attitude gave more dignity to the political environment. Experts believe that Lee Jae-myung's victory is a sign of a new liberal wave for South Korea, which is based on change, inclusion and democratic values.
Before the elections, the country was stunned when President Yoon Suk Yol suddenly announced the imposition of martial law. He cited the country's security from North Korea and internal anti-national activities as the reason for this. But the public did not accept this decision.
In just two and a half hours, 190 MPs of the Parliament voted in favor of lifting the martial law. There were massive demonstrations on the streets, sit-ins began outside the Parliament and lakhs of people demanded the restoration of democracy. The situation worsened so much that the President had to step back and hasty elections were announced.
The results of this election made it clear that the people of South Korea are no longer in the mood to tolerate dictatorial tendencies. Lee Jae-myung's victory is being considered as the victory of a mass movement, which can lead the country into a new era of liberal politics.
