International News: Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has left his official bungalow today after a new law was introduced in the Sri Lankan Parliament to abolish the privileges of former presidents. This bungalow is located in Cinnamon Gardens, a residential area of Colombo, which falls in the VIP zone. Before he left the bungalow, the Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka came to meet him.
Mahinda Rajapaksa will turn 80 in November. He has been living in the government bungalow since 2015. Rajapaksa was the President from 2005 to 2015. He has also been the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2005 and again from 2019 to 2022. Sri Lanka's long civil war ended during his tenure.
According to reports, Rajapaksa will now live at his house in Tangalle. Carlton House in Tangalle, Hambantota district, 190 km south of Colombo, is the place from where Rajapaksa started his political journey in 1970.
During the massive protests in 2022, protesters laid siege to both his bungalow in Colombo and his private house in Tangalle. However, they were not able to enter any building. After the protests, Mahinda's younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to step down from the post of President.
On Wednesday, Sri Lanka's parliament passed a bill to abolish the privileges of former presidents. This was one of the most popular pre-election promises made by the recent National People's Power (NPP) government.
The bill titled 'President's Powers (Repeal) Act No. 18, 2025' to repeal the President's Powers Act No. 4, 1986 has become an Act. Earlier, the Supreme Court had said that the bill to withdraw the privileges given to all former presidents and their wives can be approved only by a simple majority in Parliament.
