Brutal Violence in Syria’s Sweida: Hospital Shooting Sparks Global Outrage (Social media)
International News: A troubling video shared by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has shocked audiences worldwide. The footage reportedly shows fighters loyal to Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara’s government killing people inside a hospital.
According to SOHR, the incident took place inside Sweida National Hospital. The video shows several men in hospital uniforms kneeling on the floor at gunpoint, surrounded by armed men believed to be connected to Syria’s Defence and Interior ministries.
In one scene, an armed man slaps a captive in the face. As the man stumbles backward, he is shot twice from close range. The clip then shows a burst of gunfire, with several victims falling to the ground. Moments later, more shooting erupts, leaving multiple people dead.
According to reports, this violent incident happened amid intense fighting in Sweida city between Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin tribes that started in July. Witnesses and sources from SOHR say government forces entered Sweida, about 110 kilometers south of Damascus, claiming they were there to enforce a ceasefire. However, they allegedly sided with Bedouin groups against the Druze militia, escalating the conflict further.
The disturbing video has sparked widespread anger, prompting many to demand justice and accountability. Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community, condemned the killings and demanded an international investigation into the Sweida violence, including the hospital incident.
In an interview, al-Hijri insisted that those responsible must be brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC). He also urged for international observers to be deployed in the region to ensure civilian safety and prevent future atrocities.
The Druze are a minority group in Israel, with many serving in the country’s military forces. According to Druze leaders, Israeli strikes during the conflict played a key role in preventing what they described as a “large-scale massacre” of their people. This marked one of the rare occasions of direct Israeli involvement in southern Syria since the war began.
Human rights advocates around the world have condemned the killings as a gross violation of international law. The incident has intensified pressure on the Syrian government, already accused of multiple human rights abuses during the ongoing civil war.
The SOHR says it released the footage to raise awareness of the violence faced by civilians in conflict zones and to push for justice. Meanwhile, the victims’ families and community leaders are hoping that the international community will act swiftly to hold the perpetrators accountable.
This incident not only exposes the brutality of the Syrian conflict but also underscores the urgent need for stronger humanitarian protections in war-torn regions.
