International News: The ongoing border tension between Thailand and Cambodia has now drawn global attention. For the past four days, clashes have continued near a disputed border area, resulting in the deaths of at least 33 people. Due to the violence, around 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.

Malaysia Offers Mediation Platform

To reduce the tension, Malaysia has stepped in and offered to host peace talks between the two countries. Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Muhammad Hasan, confirmed that on Monday, top leaders from both Thailand and Cambodia will meet in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting will take place under the mediation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as part of efforts led by ASEAN—the Association of Southeast Asian Nations—of which Malaysia is currently the chair.

US Pushes for Ceasefire

Earlier, US President Donald Trump held separate phone calls with both leaders. He warned that if the violence continues, the United States might reconsider its trade relations with the two countries. His remarks added more pressure on both governments to take action toward peace.

While both Thailand and Cambodia thanked Trump for his concern, they chose to move forward with Malaysia’s peace proposal and agreed to join the mediation process.

ASEAN’s Role in Regional Stability

This situation marks a major test for ASEAN's role in regional diplomacy. On Thursday, as the conflict intensified, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called on both nations to stop fighting and seek a peaceful solution. His offer to mediate was accepted by both sides, giving new hope for dialogue.

The Root of the Conflict: A Temple Dispute

At the heart of the conflict is a centuries-old Hindu temple located along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Both countries claim ownership of the site, which holds cultural and religious importance. What began as a territorial disagreement has now escalated into military action, including shelling and rocket attacks.

Will Peace Talks Succeed?

With the leaders set to meet on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, expectations are high. The international community, especially ASEAN members, is watching closely. Can this meeting bring an end to the conflict? Will both countries rebuild trust? And can ASEAN prove itself as an effective peace broker in the region?

Only time will tell, but for now, Malaysia’s initiative has opened the door to possible peace.
