15 people died in the clashes (Social media)
International News: Tensions are rising fast between Thailand and Cambodia after fresh violence broke out along their shared border. A series of clashes have left many dead and wounded, raising fears of a full-scale war between the two nations.
The trouble started on Wednesday when a landmine exploded near a group of Thai soldiers. Five soldiers were injured in the blast. This incident increased tensions between the two countries, who already have a history of disputes over their border.
After the explosion, both sides reportedly exchanged gunfire and attacks. Thailand’s health ministry confirmed that 15 people were killed in the violence—14 of them civilians and one a Thai soldier. At least 46 others have been injured, according to the same report.
Thailand’s Health Minister Somsak strongly criticized Cambodia. He claimed that Cambodian forces had attacked not only military posts but also civilian areas, including a hospital. He called on Cambodia to stop the attacks immediately and return to peaceful dialogue.
The violence has forced more than 100,000 people to leave their homes near the border. Many are staying in temporary shelters and refugee camps. Local markets, schools, and roads have been shut down due to safety concerns. Fear and panic have spread throughout the region.
While Thailand has shared details about its casualties, Cambodia has not released any official numbers yet. However, some reports suggest that the Cambodian side may also have faced injuries and deaths. Cambodia, on the other hand, blames Thailand for starting the conflict.
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has requested the United Nations Security Council to step in. An emergency meeting will be held on Friday to discuss the rising violence and how to prevent further damage. Diplomatic sources confirmed the news to global media agency AFP.
The United States has shown concern over the situation and urged both countries to stop the fighting. A US spokesperson said both sides should resolve the matter through talks and avoid more bloodshed. Peace should be the priority, they added.
This is the worst border clash between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade. Experts fear that if the situation is not controlled, it could lead to a larger war that affects the entire Southeast Asian region. Peace groups have also appealed for calm on both sides.
The international community is now closely watching the developments. People across the world hope that both Thailand and Cambodia will avoid further violence and return to peaceful discussions. In the end, war will only harm innocent people—and peace is the only way forward.
