Crane Collapse Derails Passenger Train in Thailand, At Least 22 Killed (X/@prdthailand)
Thailand: At least 22 people lost their lives in a tragic accident in Thailand on Wednesday morning. The crane of a high-speed rail project under construction suddenly fell and collided with a moving train, causing the train to derail and catch fire.
The accident occurred in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 230 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bangkok. The accident occurred around 9:05 a.m. when the train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.
According to local police, construction of a high-speed rail line bridge was going on near the railway track. Meanwhile, a heavy crane working there lost its balance and fell directly on the train. The collision was so strong that many coaches of the train derailed, and some parts even caught fire.

Local police chief Thachaphon Chinawong said that at least 22 people have been confirmed dead so far. In many other reports the number of deaths was stated to be lower, but the figure later increased.
According to the Thai government, more than 30 passengers were injured. Many people remained trapped in the coaches, which took a long time to get out.
After the accident, fire brigade, medical teams and relief teams immediately reached the spot. The fire was brought under control and cranes and cutting machines were used to rescue the trapped passengers.
Police said that the rescue operation continued for several hours and efforts were made to rescue all the passengers safely.

Thailand's Government Public Relations Department informed on social media platform X that the train derailed due to a falling crane and caught fire. The post said a large number of passengers were stranded, and several teams were deployed at the spot.
The administration has ordered an investigation into the accident. It will be found out how the crane fell and what lapses there were in the security arrangements. At present, train services on this route have been temporarily stopped.
This accident is also raising serious questions on the safety arrangements of big construction projects going on in the country.
