New Delhi: Amid tensions with Iran, a US Navy aircraft carrier bound for the Middle East has run into an unexpected snag far from any battlefield. USS Gerald R. Ford, the America's newest and most expensive warship, is struggling with widespread toilet failures just as tensions with Iran climb.

Why is the toilet issue big for the warship?

The toilet breakdownin the warship is affecting daily life and mental health of thousands of sailors on board after the extended deployment of the warship, which is now in its eighth month.

The USS Gerald R Ford, which has been at sea since June 2025, has been at sea far longer than planned, has pushed its systems to the limit after far longer then planned deployment.

In January also the carrier played a important role during the US's Venezuelan strike, where President Nicolas Maduro was captured.

The sailors are exhausted and mentally disturbed due to the extended period and now the toilet breakdown issue.

How many sailors are affected?

According to the India Today reports, most of the 650 toilets in the warship are out of commission. This is due to a lack of routine maintenance, as the warship has been on the move continuously.

The vessel carries over 4,500 sailors, many of them young and far from home. With just few working toilets, sailors have to wait in lines as long as 45 minutes daily just to use the bathroom.

What is the reason of breakdown?

The warship depends on a complex vacuum-based sewage system. A single valve or pipe clog can knock out toilets across entire sections of the ship.

The main and expensive problem is calcium buildup, which clogs narrow pipelines and design flaws have worsened the problem. Repair teams are working around the clock, but most fixes can only be done in dockyards, not at sea.

Is this affecting the mission?

The ship, which has been operating since mid-2025 without returning to port, is headed toward the Middle East as part of a wider buildup amid rising US-Iran tensions.

The sanitation issues have sparked fatigue and frustration among sailors, with some saying their morale is suffering. Many are considering leaving the Navy after their deployment.
