Washington: This news concerns a tragedy that turned the joy of a wedding into mourning within just a few hours. On Friday, 25-year-old Dave Fizzy, of Indian origin, embarked on a new chapter of his life. His wedding took place in the presence of family, relatives, and hundreds of guests.
However, that very night, a helicopter crash claimed his life. According to US media reports, Dave Fizzy and the helicopter pilot died in a crash in Dawson County, Georgia, while his wife, Jesny, sustained injuries. She has been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where she is currently receiving medical care.
Dave Fizzy was a resident of Atlanta and worked as a pilot for Delta Air Lines. His wedding was held on Friday at a wedding and events venue named "The Revere," located near Dawsonville. According to the family, hundreds of guests attended the wedding ceremony, and the entire event concluded in a truly magnificent manner. Dave's parents, George and Pheeba Fizzy, had originally migrated to the United States from the Muvattupuzha region of the Ernakulam district in Kerala. Similarly, Jesny's family also hails from the Alappuzha district of Kerala.
Following the accident, Dave's father, George Fizzy, while remembering his son, described him as a precious gift from God. He noted that the wedding ceremony had been incredibly beautiful—more than the family could have ever asked for—but just a few hours later, everything changed.
According to reports, the newlyweds were scheduled to travel by helicopter to the Peachtree-DeKalb Airport after the wedding. From there, they were to spend the night at a hotel in Atlanta. However, by the time the ceremony concluded, the weather had deteriorated. The event ended around 9:30 PM; at that time, the area was experiencing rain and dense fog, which had significantly reduced visibility.
Dave Fizzy himself was an experienced commercial pilot and was concerned about flying in adverse weather conditions. His father stated that Dave had mentioned he would not fly in such low visibility conditions. Despite this, the helicopter took off. It was reported that the pilot had decided to fly at a higher altitude.
Shortly after takeoff, the five-seater Robinson helicopter crashed in an area southwest of Dawsonville. This region is known for its dense forests, hills, and rugged terrain. Following the crash, Jesny remained trapped beneath the wreckage and fallen trees for nearly five hours. George Figi recounted that when Jesny regained consciousness, she was pinned beneath the debris. She observed that Dave was lying across her chest. Jesny is a nurse by profession. She reached out to touch Dave and called out to him, but he had already passed away.
Jesny sustained deep wounds and injuries across various parts of her body; however, she did not suffer any broken bones. According to her family, she is completely devastated by the shock of losing her husband. Local officials stated that on Friday night, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office received a report regarding a helicopter crash. Subsequently, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that a Robinson R66 helicopter had crashed near Dawsonville at approximately 10:30 PM. There were three people on board the helicopter.
A local resident living near the crash site described the rescue operation as extremely challenging. Due to the dense forest and difficult terrain, it took the relief team a considerable amount of time to reach the wreckage. Rescuers had to utilize off-road vehicles and cut through thick undergrowth to clear a path. It took approximately six hours to extricate the injured woman. Andy Whittaker, Operations Director at Prestige Helicopters—the company owning the aircraft—stated that this is the first accident of its kind in the company's 40-year history. He noted that the helicopter's pilot was familiar with the route and that the company has maintained a strong safety record. The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the accident. A preliminary investigation report is expected within the next 30 days. For now, the memories of a joyous wedding—alongside this sudden and tragic accident—have become a source of profound grief for both families.
